Why emotions intensify, coping strategies, when it's PMDD
Why Emotions Get Intense
The rapid decline in estrogen and progesterone disrupts serotonin, GABA, and dopamine — all of which regulate mood.
When progesterone plummets, you lose its calming GABA-activating influence. It's literally like having a natural anti-anxiety medication withdrawn suddenly.
The result is heightened emotional reactivity — things that wouldn't normally bother you might feel unbearable.
Coping Strategies That Work
Awareness is your most powerful tool. Tell yourself: This feeling is real, but it's amplified by my hormones.
Exercise, even a 20-minute walk, boosts serotonin and endorphins. Sunlight supports serotonin production. Deep breathing activates your parasympathetic nervous system.
Journaling, talking to someone you trust, and setting boundaries around stressful interactions all help.
When It Might Be PMDD
PMDD affects 3-8% of menstruating people. Mood symptoms are significantly more intense than typical PMS and can include severe depression, panic attacks, sudden rage, and hopelessness.
Key criteria: symptoms occur during the luteal phase and resolve within days of menstruation; they significantly impair functioning; the pattern is consistent across cycles.
PMDD is treatable with SSRIs, hormonal contraceptives, CBT, and lifestyle modifications. Please reach out to a healthcare provider if you suspect PMDD.
Supporting Yourself and Getting Support
Communicating with loved ones about your cycle can transform your relationships. When they understand the biological basis, they can offer support rather than taking things personally.
Self-care during this time is necessary, not indulgent. Prioritize sleep, reduce commitments, and engage in activities that soothe you.
Tracking your mood alongside your cycle in Naya reveals your personal pattern. This predictability is empowering.
