Why it happens, how to manage it, when to check with a doctor
Why Your Breasts Hurt Before Your Period
Cyclical mastalgia affects up to 70% of menstruating people. Estrogen causes milk ducts to enlarge, while progesterone causes milk glands to swell, stretching breast tissue.
Hormonal changes also cause fluid retention in breast tissue, adding to the swelling and discomfort.
This is typically most pronounced in the 3-5 days before menstruation and usually resolves within a day or two of your period starting.
Managing the Discomfort
A well-fitted, supportive sports bra minimizes movement and significantly reduces discomfort. Some people find sleeping in a soft sports bra helpful.
Reducing caffeine has been shown in some studies to decrease breast tenderness.
Evening primrose oil contains anti-inflammatory gamma-linolenic acid (GLA). A cold compress can provide immediate relief for acute tenderness.
When to See a Doctor
Cyclical breast tenderness that follows your menstrual pattern is almost always benign. See your provider if you notice a distinct lump that doesn't change with your cycle, pain consistently in one specific spot, nipple discharge, or pain severe enough to interfere with daily activities.
Breast tissue naturally feels lumpy and changes throughout the cycle. Regular self-exams help you establish a baseline. The best time is a few days after your period ends.
If you're ever unsure about something you feel, it's always better to get it checked.
