The Wide Range of Normal
The textbook 28-day cycle is more myth than reality. Only about 13% of cycles are actually exactly 28 days long. A cycle length between 21 and 35 days is considered medically normal.
The key measure of regularity isn't hitting an exact number, but whether your cycle length is consistent within a few days from month to month.
Variation of up to 7-9 days between cycles is still considered within the normal range, especially during the first few years of menstruation and approaching menopause.
What Affects Cycle Length
Your cycle length is primarily determined by the length of your follicular phase. The luteal phase is relatively consistent at 10-16 days. So when your cycle changes, it's usually because ovulation happened earlier or later.
Many factors influence ovulation: stress, weight changes, illness, travel, sleep disruptions, dietary changes, and medications.
Age plays a role too. Cycles are more irregular in the first 2-3 years after menarche, most regular in the 20s and 30s, and may change again in the late 30s and 40s as perimenopause approaches.
When Irregular Is Worth Investigating
Consider checking in with your healthcare provider if cycles are consistently shorter than 21 or longer than 35 days, vary by more than 10 days month to month, you go 90+ days without a period (and aren't pregnant), or you experience a sudden change in a previously regular pattern.
Irregular cycles can be associated with PCOS, thyroid disorders, premature ovarian insufficiency, or structural issues like fibroids.
