How flow patterns reveal health trends over time
Your Period as a Health Indicator
Your menstrual cycle is sometimes called your fifth vital sign — alongside heart rate, blood pressure, temperature, and respiratory rate. That's because changes in your period can signal broader health shifts long before other symptoms appear.
Regular, consistent periods generally indicate that your hormonal system is functioning well. Changes in cycle length, flow intensity, or associated symptoms can reflect stress levels, nutritional status, thyroid function, hormonal imbalances, or other health conditions.
This is why tracking matters so much. A single period in isolation tells you relatively little, but patterns across multiple cycles can reveal important trends.
What to Track and Why
At a minimum, track when your period starts and stops — this gives you cycle length data, which is one of the most important indicators of hormonal health. But the more detail you add, the more useful your data becomes.
Flow intensity (spotting, light, medium, heavy) day by day helps you understand your bleeding pattern and catch changes early. Tracking associated symptoms — cramps, headaches, mood changes, energy levels — helps you see connections you might otherwise miss.
Color and clotting are also worth noting. While variation is normal, persistent changes can provide your doctor with useful diagnostic information. Think of your Naya log as a conversation with your future self and your healthcare team.
Patterns That Deserve Attention
After tracking for 3-6 cycles, you'll start to see your personal patterns emerge. Here are some changes worth discussing with a healthcare provider:
Cycle length changes — if your usually regular 28-day cycle suddenly becomes 35 or 21 days, something may have shifted. Flow changes — a period that becomes significantly heavier or lighter over several months is worth investigating. New or worsening symptoms — cramps that are getting worse over time, or new symptoms like mid-cycle spotting, can indicate conditions like endometriosis or fibroids.
Missed periods (when pregnancy isn't the cause) can signal stress, over-exercise, low body weight, PCOS, or thyroid issues. Bleeding between periods or after sex should always be mentioned to your doctor.

Quick Tip
Log your flow intensity every day of your period — even light spotting at the start and end counts as valuable data.
