Planning Ahead: Your Fertile Window Is Coming
What to know whether you're TTC or avoiding pregnancy
Understanding the Fertile Window
As you progress through the follicular phase, your body is preparing for its main reproductive event: ovulation. The fertile window — the days when pregnancy is possible — typically spans about 6 days: the 5 days before ovulation and the day of ovulation itself.
Why 5 days before? Because sperm can survive in the reproductive tract for up to 5 days when fertile-quality cervical mucus is present. The egg, however, only survives 12-24 hours after release.
For a textbook 28-day cycle, ovulation usually occurs around day 14. But cycles vary widely — that's why tracking your own cycle is so valuable.
If You're Trying to Conceive
If you're actively trying to get pregnant, the follicular phase is your preparation time. Start watching for fertile signs: increasing and more slippery cervical mucus, a slight rise in libido, and mild lower abdominal twinges.
The most fertile days are typically the 2-3 days before ovulation and the day of ovulation itself. Having intercourse every 1-2 days during your fertile window gives the best chance of conception.
Ovulation predictor kits (OPKs) detect the LH surge that occurs 24-36 hours before ovulation and can help you pinpoint timing. Basal body temperature tracking confirms ovulation after the fact. Using multiple methods together gives the clearest picture.
If You're Avoiding Pregnancy
If pregnancy isn't your goal, the approach to the fertile window requires planning and, ideally, a reliable contraceptive method. If you're using fertility awareness-based methods (FAM), this is the time to be especially vigilant about tracking.
Remember that sperm can survive up to 5 days, so unprotected intercourse even before ovulation can result in pregnancy. For fertility awareness methods to be effective, they require consistent, careful tracking.
No single method of contraception is perfect. If avoiding pregnancy is important to you, consider speaking with your healthcare provider about the full range of options.
