Peak Fertility: What to Know

Fertile window timing, conception chances, cervical mucus

Your Fertility Is at Its Peak

Ovulation is the pinnacle of your fertility cycle. The chances of conception per cycle are highest when intercourse occurs in the 1-2 days before ovulation and on the day of ovulation itself — roughly 25-30% per cycle for healthy couples under 35.

Over 6 months of well-timed attempts, approximately 80% of healthy couples under 35 will conceive, rising to about 90% by 12 months.

If you're under 35 and have been trying for 12 months (or over 35 and trying for 6 months) without success, it's a good time to talk with a fertility specialist.

Timing and the Fertile Window

The fertile window spans about 6 days — the 5 days before ovulation plus the day of ovulation. Sperm can survive up to 5 days when fertile cervical mucus is present, while the egg survives only 12-24 hours.

The most fertile days are the 2 days before ovulation and the day of ovulation itself. However, pregnancies can result from intercourse up to 5 days before ovulation.

A practical approach if you're trying to conceive: have intercourse every 1-2 days during your fertile window. Consistent attempts are more effective and less stressful than trying to time things precisely.

Cervical Mucus as Your Fertility Signal

Cervical mucus is your body's most accessible real-time fertility indicator. As ovulation approaches, it becomes progressively more wet, clear, and stretchy. At peak fertility, it closely resembles raw egg whites.

This fertile-quality mucus isn't just a sign — it plays an active role in conception. It provides channels that guide sperm toward the egg, nourishes sperm during their journey, and filters out abnormal sperm.

After ovulation, mucus thickens under progesterone's influence, becoming sticky and less hospitable to sperm.

Quick Tip

The 2 days before ovulation are your most fertile — watch for clear, stretchy cervical mucus as your body's natural signal.
